The Prophetic Significance of an Unusual Ride!
Matthew 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:29-38; John 12:12-19
Jesus riding on a donkey has a prophetic significance. The event is mentioned in all four gospels, indicating the significance of the fulfilment. Let us look at Mark’s account of the event.
Mark 11:1-10
“Now, when they drew near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples; 2, and He said to them, “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here.” 4 So they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street, and they loosed it. 5 But some of those who stood there said to them, “What are you doing, loosing the colt?” 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had commanded. So, they let them go. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ 10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
The Scene!
Jesus was standing atop the Mount of Olives overlooking the Eastern Gate (Golden Gate) of Jerusalem. He then sent His disciples to bring the donkey to Him so He could ride on it. The donkey's ride has prophetic significance!
Prophetic Fulfilment (Mark 11:1)!
500 years before Christ, Prophet Zachariah prophesied: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).
The description of the Messiah was clear in this prophecy:
· He is the King of Jerusalem!
· He is Just!
· He is Having Salvation!
· He is Lowly!
· He is Riding on a Donkey!
The most important fact is that the colt Jesus rode upon was selected to be a part of the destiny and prophetic fulfilment to join the King, experience His character of lowliness and justice, and most importantly His SALVATION!
Jesus Sent for The Donkey!
“He sent two of His disciples!”
I am personalizing this message for ME. I am that colt that Jesus sent His disciples for with the gospel message by Jesus’ messengers! I am the vehicle Jesus chose to ride upon. I am as part of the prophetic fulfilment as Jesus was!
A Colt Tied and Never Sat Upon (Mark 11:2)!
Jesus’ message to His disciples: “Go into the village opposite you; and as soon as you have entered it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has sat!”
The colt was never sat upon – a virgin colt but tied in Bondage and tied in Generational Curses and the Curses of the Bloodline!
Apostle Paul declares the status of everyone born: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Paul also describes that life comes through Jesus Christ: “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).
“Loose Him and Bring Him (Mark 11:2)!”
“Loose it and bring it!”
Jesus sent His disciples to set the colt free. The gospel sets me free. The gospel liberates me from the generational curses and the familiar spirits of my bloodline, and ONLY Jesus could do it with what He came to do: “Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
The untied colt experienced the freedom no one could offer him, just as the Spirit of God brings freedom to all believers: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (II Corinthians 3:17).
“The Lord Has Need of Him (Mark 11:3)!”
“And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it,’ and immediately he will send it here!”
“The Lord has need of (him)!”
I could never get over the fact that Jesus needs me! As significant and unworthy as I am, JESUS NEEDS ME AS PART OF HIS PROPHETIC FULFILMENT!
We have a habit of replacing people, relationships, and all those people contrary to our relationship. A part of the church even preaches “Replacement Theology” that God has replaced the Jewish Nation with the Church. God is faithful to His covenant, and He never disowns you and me. We see that in Jesus and His relationship with His disciples.
Jesus could have replaced His flawed disciples when there was a mass exodus from His teachings, but instead, He proved His faithfulness of friendship through His vulnerability when He posed the question to the disciples: “Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also, we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ (The Holy One of God), the Son of the living God’” (John 6:67-69).
Never forget that Jesus needs you and me just as we need Him. Let that thought cleanse and comfort you.
Two Ways Met (Mark 11:4)!
“So, they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door outside on the street (where two ways met), and they loosed it!”
I was the colt that no one sat upon!
I was the colt tied down in all my curses and pain!
I was on a STREET WHERE TWO WAYS MET!
What were the two ways that God describes that I face when making a choice?
1) The ways of a Blessing and a Curse: “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known” (Deuteronomy 11:26-28).
2) The ways of Life and Death: “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess” (Deuteronomy 30:15-16).
Jesus laid His eyes upon me, particularly to untie me from a curse to lead me to His blessing and redeem me from death to bring eternal and abundant life to me. I COULD NEVER GET OVER IT, AND I DO NOT WANT TO!
They Brought Him to Jesus and Cast the Garments (Mark 11:7)!
“Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it!”
The colt was decorated to be made worthy for His Master to sit upon. That signifies the decoration God offers me to carry my King: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10).
I am clothed with the garment of salvation!
I am covered with the robe of righteousness!
I am made worthy of my King Jesus to carry Him and be a part of the prophetic fulfilment for which He came!
Hosanna (Mark 11:9-10)!
“Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: ‘Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’” (Mark 11:9-10).
The historic prophetic fulfilment of Zechariah 9:9 happened with Jesus choosing a colt to ride upon to enter the Golden Gate (Eastern Gate) to the shouts and praises of His followers: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
I am that colt!
I was chosen particularly by Jesus!
The message of the gospel set me free!
I was part of the prophetic fulfilment in Jesus’ First Coming and His entry into Jerusalem!
Contrast that with the rest of Jerusalem, Jesus lamented over: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Matthew 23:37-39).
The world rejected Jesus, but I did not! I am forever grateful that Jesus included me on His journey to carry Him, become ONE with Him, and fulfill His destiny!
Prophetic Fulfilment in Jesus’ Final Coming!
Jesus started His first journey as King from atop of the Mount of Olives! He will come again after the rapture with all His saints (other colts like me) to stand on the Mount of Olives as once again Zachariah prophesied: “And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south. Then you shall flee through My mountain valley, for the mountain valley shall reach to Azal. Yes, you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake and the days of Uzziah, king of Judah. Thus, the Lord my God will come, and all the saints with You” (Zechariah 14:4-6).
Eastern Gate (Golden Gate) was shut since 1535 A.D. by King Suleiman after rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, but it will be open again for Jesus to march into Jerusalem with all His people who carried Him since His first coming. Here is the prophecy from Ezekiel: “Then He brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary which faces toward the east, but it was shut. And the Lord said to me, ‘This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter by it, because the Lord God of Israel has entered by it; therefore, it shall be shut. As for the prince, because he is the prince, he may sit in it to eat bread before the Lord; he shall enter by way of the vestibule of the gateway and go out the same way.’ Also, He brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple; so, I looked, and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord” (Ezekiel 44:1-5).
Once again, I am forever amazed with gratitude that I did not miss my call to be chosen to become a follower of my Lord Jesus!
Jesus set me free!
Jesus dressed me up with the garment of salvation and the robe of righteousness!
Jesus uses me as His vehicle to carry Him and represent Him!
When the people see me, they do not see me, but Jesus I am carrying!
I am part of the prophetic fulfilment at Jesus’ First Coming!
I will be a part of the prophetic fulfilment in Jesus’ final coming!
I HAVE NO WORDS TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO MY GOD AND MY JESUS!
Prayer
“Heavenly Father, I love You and adore You. Thank You for Your immense grace and mercy in including me as part of Your divine destiny and fulfilment by Your Beloved Son, Jesus. I am forever grateful that Your grace set me free from my bondage and curses by the blood shed on the Cross of Calvary. I will not frustrate Your grace but will live to represent my Jesus as You will enable me with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Help me, Lord, to glorify Your Holy Name all the days of my life. In the Most Wonderful and Precious Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen! Amen!!”
